In order to keep their premier credential relevant to project managers, PMI announced that it will be changing the content of the Project Management Professional (PMP)
® examination on
August 31, 2011. The changes only affect the examination, and not any of the other requirements (such as educational hours or project experience) to obtain the PMP
®.
In the past, changes to the PMP® Exam resulted from a change to the
Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge, or
PMBOK Guide, the standard used as the basis for the exam.
Not so this time. Instead, the change comes from a Role Delineation Study, or RDS. The RDS team surveyed thousands of project managers from 98 countries to determine what tasks they were doing in their actual jobs as project managers, and what knowledge and skills they considered most essential.
The content of the PMP® exam was then modified to focus on the most "important, critical, and relevant" domains and tasks.
What's different?

- 30% of the content on the PMP exam will change to better reflect the real-world knowledge needs of project managers.
- The Professional and Social Responsibility domain will merge into all the other domains. It won't be tested separately, but will be covered in each of the other areas.
- The percentage of questions in the other domains will adjust.
- If you plan to take your PMP® exam after August 31, 2011 stay tuned here, or contact PMI Registered Education Providers, like The Solarity Group, for more information about how to prepare. R.E.P.s will receive updated information
What's not changed?
- If you plan on taking the exam prior to August 31, 2011 there's no need to change your study approach.
- The PMBOK Guide will stay the same, as will the other requirements to apply for the exam.
- The score reporting is the same.
- Tests will still be taken at Prometric test centers.
- There will still be 175 scored questions, and 25 "pretest" questions, which are used to validate questions before inclusion as score-able items.
- Existing PMP® credential holders will not be affected, and will obtain Professional Development Units (PDUs) in the same way.
